SEO and Flash – One Web Developers Opinion
by admin on Sep.03, 2009, under Newmarket Web Design
We often deal with clients that are planning to get their website done/redone with Flash and would like to know our opinion on the topic. I always say that I frown on it as it will negatively impact your SEO. For those who are not sure what SEO is, it is the act of Seaarch Engine Optimization – getting higher results on the search engines.
The bottom line here is that a site built entirely in Flash still faces huge obstacles. While there have been recent moves from Google and Yahoo! to try to index the content from combined Flash/SEO sites, those moves have not yet, from my experience, translated into SEO results or success (at least when compared to html sites).
We should make a distinction here between embedded Flash and sites built entirely from Flash. For example, a site that contains Flash elements but still contains basic html elements will not overly suffer, as the Flash element (usually a movie in a box on the homepage or elsewhere) is externalized. A search engine spider will generally not try to parse through any files that have been externalized in the code – they will only index the code that is readily apparent on the source page.
However, from an SEO results perspective, there are still major issues with sites that are built entirely in Flash, and SEO is normally the first thing that suffers. First of all, the URL generally never changes no matter where people navigate on the site. As any decent SEO practitioner will tell you, every page of your site is a potential entry page for a search engine. With a site built in Flash, SEO suffers even more as you only have one potential entry page, which is the main URL. This cuts off dozens, hundreds, or thousands of potential pages that could otherwise be indexed in Google and Yahoo! (and all other engines). When your only potential entry page in the search engine listings is your home page, it is very difficult to target a wide assortment of keyphrases, potentially eliminating SEO results or rankings.
Content is another very large issue. Search engines rank pages based upon a number of criteria, but one of the most important to SEO results is the text that they can “understand” on individual pages. At present, search engines read primarily html text (although some also read text in the PDF format) – which means that if you decide that you want to use a rare and fancy font that must be displayed in graphic form (since the visitor may not have that particular font available on his or her computer while browsing), the engine will not read the text and therefore will not know what the page is about, which could harm SEO results. Naturally, this also includes any of the text included in Flash. While Yahoo! and Google have recently announced enhanced capabilities in reading content within Flash, I have not personally seen that translate into great SEO results for competitive keyphrases.
One other emerging aspect is that as search evolves, more and more people are looking for information while they are away from their computers. Many mobile devices are currently incapable of displaying Flash content, although recent moves by Adobe to make “Flash Lite” available may change this. However, it remains to be seen whether people that are seeking information on a mobile device will even want to navigate through Flash, especially if they can get the information that they seek from a fast-loading html page. In my opinion, lean html content will be at a premium when a company is trying to target a mobile audience.
Despite the difficulties, it is not the intent of this article to assert that Flash and SEO will always be incompatible – merely that it is the state of the current situation. You can find many differing opinions on mixing Flash and SEO on the internet, but the true test is to try to find a Flash site (that is to say, a site built entirely in Flash) that you admire and see if it ranks well in SEO results for 50+ competitive terms that are related to the specific business (in Google or Yahoo!). In my experience, such sites that combine Flash and SEO are nearly impossible to find.
Flash can be, and often is, used for great effect on the internet, in interactive kiosks, and in many other applications. I’m not from the “any Flash is bad” school, although I do think that many Flash practitioners tend to get a little carried away and often ignore basic usability issues. However, sites built entirely in Flash with SEO elements are still, again in my opinion, like oil and water – Flash and SEO are obviously individually useful, but they don’t mix well. Until they do, I will continue to advise my clients not to build sites entirely out of Flash – or, at the very least, to have an alternate html option for search engine and user preference purposes. At the end of the day, many clients are surprised to find out how many visitors actually prefer “old school” html.
Is your web site working?

Is your web site working?
The honest truth is that ANYONE can develop a website… just as anyone can landscape and anyone could pull a tooth. But that doesn’t mean that you’re a developer a landscaper or a dentist. Amateur and do-it yourself websites lack the necessary elements – just as pulling your own tooth with no antiseptic or freezeing is not going to go well. Abilities are needed in order to make your web site works. Not to sound brash, but, just because you have a web site does not mean it’ll do anything for your business growth. Therefore, what are you doing to make it work?
Most web sites out there are missing the key elements in order for the site to truly succeed. What is missing? … Search Engine Optimization! If your site cannot be found it’s because it has not been indexed by the search engines properly- your missing out on business! It’s similar to printing business cards and not giving them out to anyone.
Sure you put your web site on your business cards and other material, but what about the search engines, are you being found naturally. If someone searches your “industry” are you a choice?
Some of the issues for you not being found could be several reasons. Here’s just a few.
1. Your website was created many years ago or by an amateur weekend avenger web developer using an older program like front page. Search engines are constantly changing their algorithms and indexing techniques. A professional company that knows this can keep your site ranked well. Many businesses depend and RELY on their rankings to be making their six figures and for alot less than you think.
2. Your could be lacking content that the search engine crawlers are looking for when someone makes a search for your industry. Above average writing will hinder your search results. Search engines look for key words to attach you to a search. If your content consists of words which are big and less appropriate for your industry and business to make a match, you will actually be lower on the search engines. We suggest the K.I.S.S. principal when writing content.
3. Web sites built in frames or templates will generally hinder your search engine ranking. Frames are not even supported by new browsers and template designers do not design web sites with SEO scoring in mind or with how relevant your content is to your meta data…. WE ARE!
There are some exceptions to the above, but generally this requires extensive search engine optimization. Believe it or not – in most cases – it’s cheaper to redo a web site with proper SEO than it is to optimize an existing dated web site, depending on the size of the website. However, there’s a plethora of techniques and abilities that go into proper search engine optimization.

Do Websites Really Work?
by Admin on Jul.16, 2009, under Newmarket Web Design
“I have enough business. Why would I need a web site?
This is a phrase I hear time and time again. Websites can attract the right client and alleviate the tire kickers out there by focusing on your quality of sales rather than quantity. The sell low with high volume days are over. But, yet there are those who feel a web site has no use when you’re busy. WRONG!
The other day I spoke with a contractor who said just that, he has enough business. Yet after speaking with him further it was clear that it was not that he had enough business it was that he had enough of the wrong business AKA tire kickers. I then asked him how he closes his deals. He said he shows them his portfolio and his prospects typically like what he does and his price is reasonable. I then asked would it be more efficient if your portfolio was on his web site which will allow his web site to be the sales person for him rather than drive all over wasting gas and precious time. All he would have to do is encourage people to check his portfolio and if they liked what they saw they’d call back. He seemed to like that idea and for obvious reasons. Simply put a website can pre-qualify your buyer. A properly designed website is not only a great way to close deals for you; it’s a great way to save time so you’re spending more time on your business. If done properly the next call your customer makes is to buy from you.
A professional website will allow your prospective referrals and new business to draw a conclusion to whether or not to buy from you. Now here’s the catch, a bad website will determine your level of professionalism and you will loose business regardless of how great your work is. I guarantee it! Think about it for a second. You’re about to sink a ton of money into your home and the contractor does not have a web site or a really bad one, odds are he also has paper thin business cards and a junky beat up truck and lists the quote on the back of that paper thin business card, are you going to do business with him, most unlikely. However, you find another contractor who has an attractive business card gives a detailed quote of the job and has a respectable vehicle and you have already looked at his portfolio on his professionally designed website, provided that the price is reasonable odds are you’re buying for him. Same will go for your business whatever it may be. The World Wide Web attracts a new age of buyers and if you are not on the internet you’re not an option.
Web sites are subjective to the end user (that’s the guy looking for your business). Your opinion should be to attract your client, not whether not a web site has use, we’ll teach you that part.
Food for thought – If websites did not work then I would not be writing this and you would not be reading it, right? But really, if you’d like to know more about website design and website marketing and consulting and it’s use, please drop us a line and we’ll be happy to assist you.
Be A Part Of Marketing
by admin on Jul.07, 2009, under Newmarket Web Design
Like advertising, Marketing also has several definitions and the public perception of what constitutes marketing which is entirely different from that of a professional marketing solutions provider.
At Be A Part Of, we believe that marketing is an ongoing and continuously refined process of gently and subtly nudging people closer towards making a decision to purchase, use, follow, or conform to someone else’s products, services, or values. Or, to put it in layman’s terms, if it is resulting in sales then it is marketing and if it is not generating sales then it might be a failure but marketing it certainly is not.

Today’s consumers are inundated with choices. These choices could simply be based on convenient location, reputation, referrals, status and more. However, as a business, you are also inundated with mediums to reach these potential clients. So how do we do this?

Ultimately, we will take the guess work out of advertising in our community. In result we focus more on the quality of advertising verses quantity.
